Emancipation of Labor Group
- Emancipation of Labor Group
The first Russian Marxist organization, the Emancipation of Labor Group (ELG) was formed by Georgii Plekhanov, Paul Axelrod and Vera Zasulich in 1883. Plekhanov was the leading intellectual figure in the group, and the group itself was the leading Marxist organization in Russia in the late 19th century and helped to both propagate Marxism and shape its character in the country. The ELG opposed its radical rivals, the populists, who based their revolutionary socialism on the existing communes in Russia.
